Overview

Stablehands assist with maintaining and cleaning stables and handling horses.

Job Tasks

This occupation may include associated occupations with varying tasks.

  • brush and groom feed handle and exercise horses and lead them to their stables
  • check horses for lameness common injuries ailments and infections
  • give first aid medication or other treatment to horses
  • clean and maintain stables and training equipment
  • accompany horses to registered race meetings gymkhanas (horseriding events) and equestrian events
  • exercise horses during track work or equestrian activities

Training & Qualifications

Vocational education & training (VET)

  • Certificate II in Racing (Stablehand)
  • Certificate III in Racing (Advanced Stablehand)

If you enjoy dealing with people and are a good communicator then a job in the racing industry could be of interest to you. Your main responsibilities could entail taking bets and debiting credit accounts, issuing tickets and preparing summaries of transactions, monitoring amounts of money placed on race entrants and answering betting inquiries over the telephone, via email and in person.You’ll need to have a keen knowledge of the racing industry to provide advice to your customers, and be a great communicator. Most of the job will be talking to customers and ensuring their bets are captured correctly and answering a lot of questions.
